Flu Facts
Just hearing the word “flu” or “influenza” is enough to make anyone cringe. Nobody wants to be quarantined in their room with box of tissues and horrible fever! Symptoms of the flu include:
- Headache
- Fever
- Extreme fatigue
- Sore throat
- Body aches
- Nasal congestion
What else can you do to protect yourself besides getting the flu shot? For starters – and you've probably heard this a million times, but it's important so we don't mind repeating it – make sure you wash your hands often, especially during the winter (flu season). Also, remember viruses frequently enter your body through the eyes, nose and mouth, so keep your hands away from those areas. This is critically important when you're around a lot of other people.
We understand you can’t avoid everyone during the flu season. But there are steps you can take to stay as healthy as possible. Why not, for example, keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer at your desk in the office?
About the Flu Shot
The CDC recommends everyone older than 6 months should get the seasonal flu shot. However, some groups of people are at a higher risk than most.
You are at higher risk and it’s particularly important you visit a nearby flu shot clinic and get the flu vaccine if you:
- Are pregnant
- Live with or care for infants six months old and younger
- Have a medical condition that increases chances of flu-related complications (chronic conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, etc. increase your risk of influenza)
- Have a job that involves emergency medical or healthcare services
That said, people who should NOT get the flu shot are those who:
- Have a fever
- Are allergic to chicken eggs
- Have had an allergic reaction to flu shots in the past
- Are younger than 6 months
