School Physical Exams

School physicals can reveal any conditions that you need additional medical services for – and it’s easier to find this out before school starts! Getting regular school physicals from childhood (about four or five, when kids usually enter kindergarten) to young adulthood is a good practice and promotes optimal health.

Schools require physical exams for both gym classes and sports. Though it may seem like a pain to fill out those forms and take your kid to get a school physical, a physical exam ensures your child is in condition to safely participate in gym class activities.

School Physical Exam Process

A school physical has two main parts – medical history and the physical exam.

Medical exam

The doctor will look into family history for any serious illnesses or medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, epilepsy, etc. It is unsafe to participate in sports or other rigorous physical activity if you are experiencing or have experienced in the past:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Heart murmurs

A school physical can help detect any signs like this that are indicative of a serious medical condition like asthma or a cardiovascular disease.

The physical exam

In addition to measuring your child’s height and weight (typical for many medical appointments), a physical exam doctor will also:

  • Take blood pressure
  • Take your pulse (heart rhythm)
  • Check your lungs
  • Listening to your heart
  • Looking in your ears, mouth and nose
  • Evaluate your posture, joints, flexibility and reflexes

Our walk-in school physicals can allow you to participate in gym class without compromising your health and safety. Contact Fast Track Urgent Care for any further questions, and visit us in Kensington, Maryland today for your school physical exam!
